Even the most well-organized, clean offices can be breeding grounds for germs and bacteria. Because of the amount of traffic from people going about their daily tasks, there are abundant opportunities for germs to spread. Below are some of the biggest germ hotspots to keep in mind, as well as some basic cleaning tips for reducing the spread of bacteria.
Phones
A phone might not be the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to germy items in the office, but they are actually hotspots for bacteria. We touch our phones constantly, which means that they are always extremely germy! Handset office phones are exceptionally prone to accumulating germs, especially those that are shared by more than one person. To limit these germs, try to wipe down phones with antibacterial wipes regularly, at least once a day.
Keyboards/mice
Just like a phone, the keyboard and mouse of your work computer are in constant use throughout the work day. You may not share these appliances with others, but that does not mean that they do not still get dirty on a daily basis. Wipe down your keyboard and mouse at the end of the day to keep them clean.
Kitchen appliances
An office kitchen is a germ hotspot in general, but especially the appliances. The microwave, fridge, water cooler, and other shared appliances accumulate both food and people germs, which can build on each other. Soap and water is best for cleaning these, though you can also use nontoxic surface cleaners.
Bathrooms
Of course, bathrooms are probably the germiest spot possible in an office. To clean a bathroom, there are many steps involved. Thorough cleaning should include wiping down surfaces and mirrors with antibacterial wipes, scrubbing toilets and sinks, and mopping the floors.
Door handles
Door handles are among the most overlooked germiest spots in any kind of building. It’s almost impossible to not touch a door handle during the day, and as such they are touched constantly by many different people. To keep them clean, door handles should be wiped down with antibacterial wipes at least once a day, and possibly more depending on the amount of traffic.
Vending machines
Not every office has vending machines, but all vending machines are office germ hotspots! Between the fact that users of vending machines will often handle coins/bills while touching it, and the fact that so many people touch vending machines daily, they are not exactly the cleanest of appliances. Wipe down the keypad/card reading areas of a vending machine daily to keep it as clean as possible.
