In a modern day office, electronics are key to the function of the jobs of everyone who works there. With so much daily use, it’s only natural that these electronics will become dirty or in need of cleaning to keep them functioning correctly. However, if done incorrectly, attempting to clean electronics could result in some kind of electrocution or other damage to either the cleaner or the electronics. Below are some easy ways to safely clean office electronics.
Power down and unplug
The first step before cleaning any electronic is to be sure it is shut off and unplugged. This is important to avoid any potential electrical hazards. Additionally, especially if the device is touch-screen, it is easier to shut it off to avoid accidentally pressing things or opening applications.
Microfiber cloths
Microfiber cloths are very soft towels that are great for removing dust and/or dirt from any office electronics. These cloths are lint-free, which means that, after being washed before use, they will not leave behind any residue. You can use them dry, or wet them with distilled water to wipe down surfaces. A screen wipe will also serve the same purpose.
Aerosol duster/Q tips
Cleaning computer keyboards can be difficult, especially when dust and other debris gets between the keys. Thankfully, there are several easy ways to tidy a keyboard without breaking it. The first method is to use an aerosol duster, also known as canned air. Start by unplugging the keyboard from any devices it is connected to. Then, simply use the can to blow air through the straw and between the keys, blowing away anything caught in the gaps. Another method is to lightly wet the end of a Q tip with isopropyl alcohol and wipe between the keys.
Disinfectant
The key to safely using disinfectant on electronics is to choose a type that dries quickly. Soap and water is great for surfaces, but for electronics, it can cause electrical issues that can pose a safety hazard. Instead, use the following for disinfecting electronic devices: isopropyl alcohol, glass cleaner, or semi-dry Clorox wipes.
Don’t forget cables/chargers
It can be easy to forget the cables and chargers plugging in electronic devices, but they need to be cleaned as well. A daily wipe-down with disinfectant should do the trick. Take precautions to not use wet products, especially close to the plugs of the cords. Use the disinfectants listed above and be sure to let the prongs of the plugs dry before plugging them into an outlet.
