Most people recognize that cleaning is important, but that doesn’t mean that everyone is perfect at it. It’s easy to focus on larger areas, and sometimes specific spots are missed while cleaning. Often, the same spots are commonly missed by a majority of people. Here, we will highlight several of these commonly overlooked areas, and suggest ways to work them into your cleaning routine.
Baseboards
Possibly the easiest spot to miss, baseboards are usually the last thing on the mind while cleaning. They are uniquely positioned to be particularly annoying to clean, and require awkward positioning to do so. However, it is important to clean the baseboards because they get dirty quickly, and can make a room seem much dingier if left to accumulate dust and dirt. Try to work them into your cleaning routine by wiping them down with a wet towel or a dry microfiber cloth. We recommend cleaning baseboards at least once a week.
Window sills
Window sills are another area commonly missed while cleaning. They are especially easy to overlook with curtains blocking them from view. Both curtains and window sills need cleaning, so try to tackle them simultaneously. While you wash your curtains, go ahead and wipe down your window sills. That way, you can make sure both are regularly cleaned without forgetting about one or the other.
Vents
The air vents in your home are one of the hardest areas to remember to clean, but doing so can have a huge effect on the quality of indoor air. The dust collected in the vents will be spread throughout the building if allowed to accumulate without cleaning. There are duct cleaning brushes you can get to clean through the grates of the vents, and an HVAC company can do the same for you during routine maintenance on your AC system. The ventilation system is so important for your health and comfort, so make this a priority.
Ceiling fans
Just like air vents, ceiling fans that are allowed to build up dust and dirt on them will distribute it throughout the room. Cleaning ceiling fans will require a ladder, but other than that it is a very easy spot to clean. Use a duster or damp towel to wipe away any dust on both sides of the fan blades as well as the center of the fan.
Underneath/behind furniture
For most, cleaning behind and beneath furniture is already second-nature when sweeping and vacuuming. However, it doesn’t hurt to have a reminder. It is important to move furniture regularly and clean the dirt, dust, and random objects that will accumulate in the space. This cleaning should be done several times a week, if not daily. Move the furniture and use a broom or vacuum to clean where it was.
