Office cleanliness is important for a good work environment, especially when it’s a shared space. However, did you know that even the cleanliness of your personal workspace can affect your mood? A disorderly desk can make a chaotic workday even more stressful, while a clean workspace creates a sense of calm and control. Even if there isn’t time every day to fully reorganize your entire desk, you can implement a few, small cleaning methods that will drastically improve the tidiness of your workspace.

Clean your keyboard

If you work at an office job, chances are that you use a computer with a keyboard. As is the case with anything used daily, your keyboard will quickly become dirty. However, keyboards seem rather tricky to clean, and a lot of people don’t bother with the process. Luckily, if you have the right tools, cleaning a keyboard can be quite simple. Below are some tips:

  • Make sure your keyboard is disconnected or your laptop is turned off before cleaning.
  • Use a can of compressed air for removing the dust, crumbs, or other debris caught beneath the keys. Spray in a zigzag pattern, and don’t try to spray directly under the keys with the straw.
  • Use q-tips for cleaning between keys. Isopropyl alcohol is great for removing difficult stains.

Organize work papers

It’s impossible to maintain a clean workspace if you have unorganized, loose papers littered around your desk. For paper organization, keep files for different document categories. Binders, file folders, and color-coded tabs are all great ways to categorize papers. Additionally, designating a specific drawer or section of your desk to papers ensures that important documents are accounted for.

Dust your workspace

Dust will quickly accumulate in a workspace, especially in the nooks and crannies of a desk. It is best to keep a duster or microfiber cloth handy to quickly wipe down dusty services. Furthermore, if you notice excessive dust that is hard to keep up with, you may want to consider purchasing a small air purifier. This will trap dust before it settles in your space.

Disinfect regularly

An office workspace may not seem like the dirtiest environment, but there are still many germs and harmful bacteria that can be harmful to your health. Clean with disinfectant wipes and/or disinfectant spray 1-2 times a week. Workspaces in medical offices should be cleaned daily.
