Dust is inevitable, but that doesn’t mean that it’s good to have a lot around. Not only is dust visually unappealing, but it can lead to harmful effects on one’s health. The solution is to clean dust and remove it regularly from areas in which it has settled. Of course, dusting is one way to minimize this issue, but it often is not enough to truly solve the problem. There are other ways to get to the root of the problem and stop dust from floating around your home or office. Below are a few key cleaning tips that will keep dust to a minimum.

Change your bedding often

Bedding is a huge dust accumulator, as dust is mainly composed of dead skin and dirt. Not only does bedding gather dust and bacteria, but it is also the perfect home for dust mites that feed on flakes of dead skin. To avoid this hygiene disaster, cleaning experts suggest changing bedding at least once a week. Bedding should be washed in hot water of at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit if possible. If the bedding cannot be washed in hot water, place it in the dryer for 15 minutes at 130 degrees.

Declutter your space

Clutter is a magnet for dust because it provides more surface area for particles to land and accumulate. By keeping a tidy, clutter-free space, you can prevent dust from settling onto the random odds and ends that would usually just be sitting out. Put away objects that can be stored. Additionally, be sure to periodically dust beneath small items on desks and tables.

Avoid excess carpeting

Just like bedding, carpeting is a breeding ground for dust mites. While vacuuming can limit the dust constantly trapped in the carpet, it can also make the situation worse by kicking up dust that settles back down. By limiting the amount of carpets in your space, you can also limit dust in general. Wash area rugs as often as possible.

Change your HVAC air filter

Air filters work to keep your indoor air quality high by filtering out allergens, dust, and other harmful particles. However, after a while, these filters fill up and can become clogged. By regularly changing the air filters in your home (about once every 3-4 months), you can ensure that your air conditioning unit is processing out allergens that could otherwise be irritating you and those around you.

Mop the floors/clean with wet cloths

Mopping is extremely effective for cleaning dust. Because of the water element of the mopping process, dust is absorbed rather than pushed around. The same principle applies to wiping up dust with a wet cloth rather than using a regular duster. Cleaning dust with dry materials could lead to spreading the dust even further, so wet materials are preferable.
